BBDN NORTH FULTON | Updated November 6, 2026
If you saw that Highway 9 is only 9.94% complete and should finish in 2027, there is a big piece of the story missing. Those figures appear on an older Georgia DOT project dashboard. Milton is now leading a redesigned version of the Windward Parkway-to-Forsyth County widening project, and the city describes a much longer timeline. Here is what the current records actually say.

The quick answer
- Where: Highway 9 / SR 9 from Windward Parkway to the Fulton/Forsyth county line, approximately 3 miles.
- Who is leading: City of Milton manages design and day-to-day delivery, with GDOT funding and approval.
- Current stage: Redesign, engineering, public input and right-of-way work, not a confirmed near-term construction completion.
- Timeline: Milton says design and right-of-way acquisition are scheduled through 2030, with construction afterward. No exact construction start date is currently established.
- Proposed improvements: Four continuous lanes, raised median, intersections, pedestrian and bicycle connections, and a planned 35 mph design speed.
Where will Highway 9 be widened?
The affected stretch runs north from Windward Parkway, where Alpharetta meets Milton, to the Forsyth County line. GDOT’s older description measures the project at 3.04 miles. The City of Milton describes its segment as approximately three miles and identifies this road as the backbone of the city’s main commercial area, including Deerfield.

Why did the timeline change?
The state previously managed a construction-phase widening project, identified in GDOT records as PI 0007838. Milton’s 2024 announcement described the contractor receiving notice to proceed and an expected late-2027 contract completion. That background explains why older dashboard figures and graphics continue to circulate.
In 2025, Milton and GDOT established a new city-led delivery arrangement for the corridor. Milton’s September 16, 2025 announcement confirmed City Council approval of an agreement with GDOT and a renewed redesign process. The city’s subsequent planning and engineering materials identify PI 0021273. Read Milton’s 2025 agreement announcement.
The current City of Milton project page says the design and right-of-way acquisition phases are planned to run through 2030. Construction would take place after those phases. The city explicitly says an exact construction-start timeline remains under development.
What will the redesigned road include?
- Four lanes: Two travel lanes in each direction along the corridor.
- Raised median: A center median between opposing traffic.
- Intersections: Turn lanes, upgraded signals and other safety-focused improvements.
- Walking and biking: More sidewalk connectivity, pedestrian crossings and bicycle facilities, including a multi-use trail element.
- Speed: A proposed reduction to a 35 mph design speed.
- Milton character: Community-oriented streetscape and design features, with some final details still subject to change.
Those are proposed design elements, not a statement that the final engineering plans have been approved or the improvements already built.
Who pays for Highway 9?
Milton states GDOT will reimburse eligible engineering, right-of-way, construction and related project expenses so long as the project stays within its approved footprint. The City manages day-to-day project work, while GDOT retains approval authority. That is separate from the legacy construction amount associated with the older GDOT entry.
What about the 9.94% complete and $62.45 million figures?
Important distinction: GDOT’s older GeoPI entry for PI 0007838 displayed 9.94% construction complete, a December 31, 2027 completion date and a historical construction contract amount around $62.45 million. Those figures describe the legacy dashboard entry. They should not be interpreted as the completion percentage, approved final budget or current completion promise for Milton’s redesigned project. We are preserving these numbers here as source context precisely because residents may have seen them online. For the current schedule, the City of Milton’s project page and subsequent official updates are the better reference.

What does this mean for nearby residents and businesses?
The affected corridor serves residential neighborhoods, shopping centers and the Deerfield area. The eventual design can affect driveway access, intersection movements, traffic patterns, pedestrian access and right-of-way. Exact property impacts, construction phasing, detours and lane-closure schedules have not been established by the city’s current public summary.
Milton reported ongoing community conversations about the redesign in July 2026. Its March 2026 reporting also discussed a smaller interim gravel-path improvement north of Bethany Bend, which is separate from the future major road reconstruction. Read the city’s public-input update and its interim path announcement.
Frequently asked questions
Is the Highway 9 widening already 9.94% complete?
That number belongs to an older GDOT construction dashboard record. It does not reliably describe progress toward completion of Milton’s redesigned Highway 9 project.
Will Highway 9 be finished in December 2027?
Not according to Milton’s current project timeline. The city says design and right-of-way work are scheduled through 2030, with construction afterward.
Where does the project start and end?
From Windward Parkway at the Alpharetta/Milton border north to the Fulton/Forsyth county line, approximately three miles.
What is the next decision point?
Watch for new public design materials, community meetings, right-of-way updates and an officially adopted construction schedule. Milton’s project page includes a way for residents to submit feedback.
