Alpharetta is getting closer to connecting two trail systems that, despite sitting only a short distance apart, have largely functioned as separate networks.
Alpharetta City Council has approved a $15.99 million design-build contract for Alpha Link, a trail connection planned along the GA 400 corridor between Haynes Bridge Road and Encore Parkway.
The project is designed to connect the Alpha Loop near Morrison Lake and Lakeview with the Big Creek Greenway near Encore Parkway and North Point Parkway.
And while the headline is nearly $16 million for a trail project, the more interesting story may be what Alpharetta is trying to connect.
What is the Alpha Link?
The Alpha Loop has steadily created pedestrian and bicycle connections between Downtown Alpharetta, Avalon, Northwinds and surrounding activity centers.
Big Creek Greenway operates on the other side of the GA 400 corridor and extends through Alpharetta and beyond.
Alpha Link is intended to close the missing connection between those systems.
Planning for that connection is not new. The Atlanta Regional Commission previously included North Point Alpha Link work in its Livable Centers Initiative transportation program. The important difference now is that Alpharetta has approved a design-build contract for implementation.

Where will Alpha Link go?
The corridor runs generally along GA 400 between Haynes Bridge Road and Encore Parkway.
On the northern and western side, the connection reaches the Alpha Loop around Morrison Lake and Lakeview. On the North Point side, it connects into the Greenway near Encore Parkway and North Point Parkway.
Alpharetta’s planning documents also identify Alpha Link as an important connection in the broader North Point area, which is one reason this matters beyond recreation.

How much will it cost?
The approved design-build contract is approximately $15.99 million.
That is a major step beyond the earlier planning and preliminary-engineering phases. It means the project has moved from concept and design work into a funded implementation stage.
When will Alpha Link open?
That part is not known yet.
Construction is expected to require roughly 18.5 months, but a definitive construction start date has not been announced in the current public information.

How do all of these places connect?
The real-estate connection
For homebuyers, proximity alone is not the same thing as usable connectivity.
A neighborhood might sit close to Downtown Alpharetta, Avalon, the Greenway or North Point geographically while still requiring a car for almost every trip.
Projects like Alpha Link can change that relationship over time by creating additional pedestrian and bicycle connections between destinations.
That does not guarantee higher home values, and buyers should be skeptical of anyone promising that a public project automatically increases property prices. But accessibility, trails and the ability to reach amenities without driving are legitimate lifestyle considerations when comparing neighborhoods.
What happens next?
The next thing to watch is the actual construction schedule.
The city has approved the contract and identified an estimated construction duration, but the public information available today does not provide a definitive construction start date.
Once that date is announced, we’ll have a much clearer picture of when Alpharetta residents could actually use the completed connection.
